Fall 2009

Volume 1, Issue 4

Group Profile: Archdiocese of Seattle Youth Group

The Archdiocese of Seattle brought to VCS four of the hardest working kids Seattle Central had seen in a long while.  Central Coordinator, Jaime Rohrer said, "These kids rolled up their sleeves and got to work.  Not only did they work in 100 degree heat like it was no big deal, but they treated my clients with dignity and respect.  Perfect team!"  The four teens (Steffi, Davis, Chris and Rebecca) and their leader (Joe) cleaned and organized for 5 disabled and elderly residents of the low income apartment building Olive Ridge, making a huge difference in their lives!  "It is nice to know that these kids are our future leaders," Jaime said, "They really inspired me!"

What Has The VCS Staff Been Up To?

VCS Staff Project

VCS Team had a special day out of the office enjoying awards given for work over the year. All staff members received a "What a Great Idea" award, such as West King County coordinator Kerrie Carberry’s award for her work with the Gift of Volunteering. Following our celebration, we headed to a Beacon Hill client's home to work in her life's garden. This garden had obviously been tended to daily with lots of love and dedication. Our staff, including our Program Manager, Eileen, and our Balance of State and Clinical Director Gail, and Balance of State Admin Assistant David joined for 3 hours of weeding and yard work which pleased the client immensely. We all shared pie at the end.

VCS Staff

Our former intake specialist, Rachel, has moved on from VCS to attend school in San Francisco for a counseling degree but not before she takes a month to explore Latin America!  She enjoyed very much working with VCS and the clients and volunteers and will be missed.

Katy Lemeshko joined us in July as Intake Specialist.  She is a WWU grad and has worked at the CCS Bellingham Recovery Center in the Chemical Dependency department for four years.  We are thrilled to work with Katy and have whole-heartedly welcomed her aboard.  She is doing some fantastic work already!

Volunteer Superhero!

Volunteer Superhero John Feeney has saved the day many times. While he works regularly with a senior gentleman living in Tukwila, John is also always willing to help with other tasks, large and small, whenever he can. He’s passed along advice for projects, helped with moves, and most recently he traveled all the way from his home in Burien to Beacon Hill to help an 89 year old with her broken door. This woman could not get in and out of her front door, and was climbing through the window until John visited! Currently, John is hoping for a small team to help his regular client with some major yard work that would go quickly with a few extra pairs of hands.

One-Time Client Needs

  • Soft spoken, kind 69-year-old man in Capitol Hill with severe back pain and arthritis needs a few people to help clean his kitchen and his bathroom.  Elbow grease required!  Help him pass his upcoming inspection with flying colors! Call Jaime at (206) 328-5656.

  • Gentleman with severe hip pain in need of transportation to grocery store and help carrying groceries into his 2-floor apartment. He lives in Federal Way and is looking for twice monthly assistance. Call Kizzie at (253) 850-2509.

Volunteers, We Appreciate You!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful volunteers! …

"I am always so grateful when volunteers step up to last minute requests for transportation. Often times it is these last minute doctor appointments that are the most critical for those we serve." ~Kizzie, South King Co. Coordinator

Thank you to all of the volunteers who called their clients to ensure that they were OK during the heat wave. Volunteers gave cooling tips and encouraged clients to drink extra water. VCS relies on you so greatly to keep us updated on any major changes for your client(s), and we appreciate your hard work very much. ~VCS Staff
