Catholic Housing Services Celebrates Blessing and Dedication Events at Catherine of Siena Village in Forks

Blessing Rite at Catherine of Siena Village

The Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain, Archbishop of Seattle, recently performed the Blessing Rite at Catherine of Siena Village as part of a two-day visit to the Forks community. On Sunday, July 8, Archbishop Sartain began the day by celebrating Mass at St. Anne Church. At the conclusion of Mass, the Archbishop invited parishioners to join him in a procession to Catherine of Siena Village, located a short distance from the church. The parishioners joyously sang “Holy God We Praise Thy Name” during the procession, and then gathered in the courtyard of the Village for the Archbishop’s welcome and comments. The parishioners provided tremendous support to the Archbishop by continuing to sing the hymn as he blessed each and every building on the site!

The Very Rev. Gary M. Zender, Vicar for Catholic Charities and Chair of the CCS/CHS Boards of Trustees, and Rev. Paul J. Brunet, the new pastor at St. Anne’s, also joined Archbishop Sartain for the Mass and the Blessing. Anita Ferris, Council Chairperson at St. Anne Parish, and Kris Weaver of Peninsula Housing Authority, participated in the celebration and were instrumental in organizing the day’s events. After the Blessing, the group gathered in the community room for refreshments. Several of the parishioners commented on how beautiful the new homes are and how glad they were to have the new housing in Forks. The participation by the local parish added a truly special feeling to the Blessing.

A Dedication and Ribbon Cutting event was held on July 18 at the Village, with many project partners and community representatives in attendance. Rob Van Tassell, Vice President for Housing and Community Development, warmly welcomed the crowd of almost 60 who traveled from near and far to participate. Distinguished guests included Michael Dotson, Senior Vice President with Bank of America, and Bryon Monohon, the Mayor of Forks. Catherine of Siena resident Kathleen (Kat) Fultz expressed her gratitude and appreciation for her new home. Kat added that she had been homeless for many years, and was one of the first residents to move into the Village last November. She expressed how much she loves Christmas and what it had meant to her to have a home of her own in which to set up a Christmas tree and hang the many boxes of ornaments that had been in storage for years. What a simple thing to bring so much joy!

Very Rev. Gary Zender shared his thoughts and prayers, and then participated in the ribbon cutting with resident Kat Fultz and Rev. Paul Brunet, Pastor of St. Anne’s. The celebration continued with a pizza lunch and reception for all guests and residents. The beautiful summer weather added to a very special day for all who gathered to celebrate the Dedication.
