Giving Back at CCS’ Youth Tutoring Program
Why does Shannon Crowley volunteer? “If you give it away, you get so much more back.” As a member of the Association for Catholic Childhood (ACC), Shannon has sponsored parties for Catholic Community Services’Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) for more than 6 years.
One year Shannon brought a box of books to hand out at a party and looked outside to see students scattered and reading independently rather than playing in the sun. She shares, “There are kids that are struggling, there are kids that don’t have an abundance of books and they’re so grateful when they get books.”
Shannon’s children, Dan and Maddy, are also enthusiastic volunteers for YTP as tutors. Dan says, “Interacting with the students, I learned a little about myself and about how to communicate effectively and work with other people.” Maddy echoes Dan, saying, “It’s important to interact with young people other than your peers at school—you get a different perspective.”
CCS’ Youth Tutoring Program is an after-school educational enrichment program for vulnerable 1st–12th grade students who live in low- and mixed-income housing communities in Seattle. Volunteers are the heart of the program, helping provide youth with a safe, positive, and stimulating environment to explore learning and experience academic and personal success.
