Legal Action Center

The Legal Action Center strives to prevent homelessness by offering preventive advice, negotiation and representation to preserve and improve landlord/tenant relationships. The Legal Action Center offers free legal assistance to low income people with the following types of legal problems:

Landlord/Tenant

  • Eviction
  • Repairs/Habitability
  • Deposits
  • Retaliation
  • Lease/Sublease
  • Lockouts

Debtor/Creditor related to past tenancies

In eviction cases, clients talk to our staff over the phone, then may be schedule for an appointment. Attorneys and paralegals provide legal assistance ranging from self help information to court representation.

In most other cases, appointments are made at one of our Neighborhood Outreach sites. A volunteer attorney evaluates the client's legal problem and offers legal advice. A law student or paralegal may, under the supervision of a staff attorney, provide follow-up to resolve the matter out of court.

Who is Eligible

A person is eligible for legal assistance through the Legal Action Center if he or she;

  • Has a legal problem which falls within the categories listed;
  • Has an income of less than 187% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines;
  • Is a resident of King County

Coming Home Project

The Coming Home Project provides twelve months of intensive case management to formerly homeless adults who have transitioned into our permanent housing programs. A team of four Housing Stabilization Specialists provides support and advocacy with the goal of helping tenants adjust to and maintain permanent housing. Currently, the Coming Home Project provides services at the Frederic Ozanam House, the Frye, the Josephinum, Dorothy Day House and the Wintonia. We work with people who move into the buildings listed above. We are unable to take referrals or to assist people in finding housing.
